Could Marathon des Sables, MDS, be the toughest footrace on earth? Imagine a run over 250 km in the Sahara desert with temperatures reaching 50+ degrees. In just 6 days, the participants have to complete this multi-stage adventure, carrying their own food and equipment for the week. During the MDS 2017 run in Morocco, HemoCue Hb 201+ was used to measure Hb of the participants and as part of the anti-doping management program.
In this video, Dr Pierre Salet, responsible for the Health & Anti-Doping Management program, explains that they test the Hb of the participants prior and during the entire run. This is both health precaution measures and to ensure that the participants are competing without using any forbidden substances classified as doping.
